Welcome to Ms Kara Warburton and Mr Masayuki Hirata

Welcome to Ms Kara Warburton and Mr Masayuki Hirata, who have formally joined the DSG as full-time PhD candidates.

Kara Warburton, from Canada, joined the DSG as a PhD candidate after spending 15 years managing IBM's global terminology database and management processes. She has experience in term extraction, terminology management, and terminology repurposing for controlled authoring, computer assisted translation, machine translation, and search optimization. Kara is the International Chair of ISO Technical Committee 37, which is responsible for developing standards for terminology and other language resources, and is a terminology advisor to the Localization Industry Standards Association. She has a BA in French Translation, an MA in Terminology Management, and a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

Masayuki Hirata worked as a bilingual lexicographer for Longman Dictionaries, Pearson Education. He was one of the joint managing editors for the Longman English-Japanese Dictionary projects, responsible for training the team of Japanese lexicographers and signing off the final text for the Longman English-Japanese Dictionary (published in 2007). He was also the project leader for building the Longman Corpus of Contemporary Japanese. Masa moved to Hong Kong in 2007, and he has been teaching Japanese part-time, in CTL/Community College of City University, and in SCPS of Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has a BA in English linguistics from Waseda University in Japan, and an MA in Language Studies from Lancaster University in the UK.

I am happy to announce that Ms Maggie Zhang and Mr John Li have been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Academic Performance Award to Research Degree Students for the academic year 2009-10 by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies. Ms Cecilia Cao has also been previously awarded the same cash prize for her academic excellence. Congratulations!

DSG Meeting with Dr. Clement Tsang

Dr. Clement Tsang is going to meet with us this week to have a look at our demo and discuss possible future collaboration. He is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). Before joining MUST, he worked as a researcher in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and as a Health Promotion Officer at the Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion.

New Dialogue System Demo

Our latest demonstration dialogue system is now available for public access. The system provides an interface to the Medical Subject Headings database and currently provides definitions for medical terminology. Detailed instructed instructions for connecting to the system using a softphone are available here.

Dr. Raquel Fernandez's visit to the DSG

Dr. Raquel Fernandez is joining the research group during March 2010, as a Visiting Fellow. She is an independent Research Fellow at the Institute for Logic, Language & Computation at the University of Amsterdam. She has worked as a researcher in the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI), Stanford University, and in the Linguistics Department at the University of Potsdam. She is one of the founding and managing editors of the new international journal "Dialogue & Discourse" ( and co-president of the SemDial Board overseeing the organization of the Workshop Series on the Semantics and Pragmatics of Dialogue ( She holds a Master's in Cognitive Science and a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics from King's College London.
